CNN Money has recently run a feature of the 50 best places to launch a small business. It turns out that Wilmington ranks #14 in the mid-size towns considered. But I knew that already. From the first day I visited Wilmington, I found the people and the business climate to be very open and friendly and conducive to opening a store here. I could have gone to a large city and maybe been more successful, but I was always drawn to the small town atmosphere here. It has proven to be a wonderful place to live, work and do business.
Spectrum Art & Jewelry has been around for over 12 years now and we are still growing and evolving. We are in our third consecutive location, a bigger, brighter and better located spot than ever before. It is such a treat to earn a living doing what I love and working with delightful people and customers. I intend to keep doing this for a long, long time.

1st Annual Pink Chick Parade at The Forum
As most of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To draw attention to the cause and to raise money for the Pink Ribbon, The Forum shopping center will host its first annual Pink Chick Parade along Military Cutoff Road.
For $125 - the cost of a mammogram - sponsors can adopt a 5 foot tall Pink Chick to join the parade. These eye-catching ladies will stand as a symbol of your support to the cause of finding a cure for this dread disease. Your adopted Chick can be personalized with a message to honor or remember a friend or loved one.
The Pink Chick Parade will remain on display throughout the Month of October, marching down the greenway along Military Cutoff Road, in front of the Forum Shopping Center.
You can adopt your own Pink Chick at any of the retail businesses at The Forum. 100% of your donation of $125 is made directly to The Pink Ribbon, a local organization that funds mamograms for under or uninsured women in this region. Nationally renowned jewelry designer, Patricia Daunis has designed and created fine jewelry for more than 28 years. She will be exhibiting her collections of gold and sterling silver jewelry at Spectrum Art and Jewelry on Friday and Saturday, October 9th and 10th between the hours of 10am and 6pm. There will be a reception and Open House October 9th from 6-8pm.
Daunis’ reputation as a designer has been acknowledged with multiple awards such as Diamond Today Award, Jewelers of America Award and two World Gold Council Grand Prizes, to name a few.
Her collection is infinitely customizable. Starting with unique and graceful forms in gold and silver Daunis can add a selection of gemstones according to each customer’s desires. To make it easy for the client to visualize, Patricia uses her computer to “virtually” set the jewels into her pieces. This allows her to clearly show what the piece will look before it is even made.
While at Spectrum Gallery, Daunis will be designing unique jewelry creations for clients using their own gemstones or a selection from her extensive inventory. These designs are especially appropriate for family jewelry when set with various birthstones. “Every one is one-of-a-kind, just like every family.” Daunis declares.
Daunis will also have her famous earrings and specialty earring jackets---that can go with a person’s existing diamond stud earrings as an enhancement. Speaking on her upcoming show, Daunis said, “I enjoy when women come in to play dress-up and try on my jewelry. I get inspiration for new ideas and we often collaborate on designs together.”

Ever wondered how a painter starts a painting? What about their style of composition, laying down the paint and completing the work that makes it uniquely their own?
Come by Spectrum Art & Jewelry on Saturday, November 7, 2009 from
10:30am until 12:30pm and watch this process be turned upside down and inside out!
Four local Wilmington painters – Jane Faudree, Kristin Gibson, Nancy Noel May and Phil Meade* will demonstrate their creative process. Each artist will be given an identical B&W landscape photograph for inspiration and an 11x14 canvas. The each of the artists will begin a painting, laying out the composition according to their personal interpretation. After 30 minutes, the canvases will be passed to the next artist. Each of the four painters will work on all canvases. In just two hours it will be readily apparent in how different each painting will look – depending on which artist begins and which completes each piece.
Then plan to return on Friday, November 13 from 6pm - 8pm for an Artists’ Reception and a Benefit Auction. The four paintings will be auctioned off with the entire proceeds of their sale to benefit Dreams of Wilmington. Other artworks by the four participating artists will also be on display and a portion of the proceeds from any sales made in the gallery that evening will also be donated to Dreams.

Jane Faudree
“Painting is an integral part of who I am. It’s in my bones. My favorite subjects are of coastal North Carolina, which made it easy to move here. Most of my work is done with palette knife, thickly applied, which gives it a wonderful tactile quality. Color, light play, and contrasts all attract my attention when I start to compose a painting. Living in an area rich with wildlife, an ocean, river, lake and gardens keep me absolutely dizzy deciding what to paint next.”
Jane is a native of Greenvile, North Carolina. An award-winning artist, Jane’s work has been consistently accepted in local and national exhibits and hangs in corporate and private collections throughout the U.S. and in Europe. She currently resides in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Kristin Gibson
Kristin Gibson is a professional artist who lives and works in Carolina Beach near Wilmington, NC. A prolific painter and mother of two, Kristin creates spirited “alla prima” paintings stirred from elements of daily life. Color and pattern inspire the lyrical sensibilities of her paintbrush. Further influenced by the ebb and flow of a lifetime by the sea, she calls her backyard work space “Saltwater Studio.”
“My works begin as drawings using my paintbrush, with composition, color, and intuition my subjects. Organic shapes and hues from daily life offer a jumping off point for the very act of drawing, painting, and composing color. A fluent process of color into color, wet paint into wet paint takes over and continues until I find harmonious resolution of form, pattern, and color.”
Nancy Noel May
I have always loved to paint, starting with formal lessons as a young child in Hampton, VA. The coastal influences of color and scenery have been with me from the start. I grew up in a small coastal community on the Chesapeake Bay and daily trips to the beach provided me with infinite sand canvases. I remember drawing pictures in the sand and decorating them with shells and driftwood.
Clear, vibrant colors and a strong source of light are the prime elements of my paintings. I love to travel and explore new places, I rarely go without my digital camera and sketch pad to record my experiences. Bringing these images back to my studio enable me to relive my travels through my paintings.
Moving to Wilmington, NC in 1984 brought me back to the coastal influences with which I started. The easy going style, clarity of light and color continues to be a significant reminder that I am essentially a sea-level woman.
Phil Meade
Weathered dune fences and the wild flowers that struggle to grow around them, the ocean and inland waterways, formal gardens that show off the beauty that is the southeast coast - all provide a wealth of inspiration for Phil Meade.
Oil painter, Phil Meade, of Leland, NC has always been interested in art. He started drawing and painting in high school and went on to study art at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. After graduating, he went on to pursue a commercial art career. As a graphic designer, he found that his understanding of light and shadow along with form and perspective guided his illustrations in a real and convincing manner.
During this time, Phil never lost his passion for painting. However, between raising a family and working full time, he found only limited amounts of time to focus on his own pursuit of fine art. Now that Phil has retired, he is pursuing his dream of painting full time as a professional artist.
